Parks and Recreation

About the Department

The Oakland Recreation Department began its full time operation on July 1, 1990 after a vote of the townspeople at the spring Town Meeting. Since that time, the department has been pleased to offer a variety of special events, seasonal activities, sports programs, and senior citizen offerings. Recreation Director Eric Seekins has headed this department since 1990.

Our greatest treasure to the department (other than the children of course!) is the protection of our 75 acres at Pleasant Point on McGrath Pond dedicated to the recreational enjoyment of our citizens.

ENJOY LIFE……….RECREATE!!

Messalonskee Stream Trail
1115 Kennedy Memorial Drive

The Messalonskee Stream Trail was built in 2007 by Lester Kenway and the Maine Conservation Corp. This 2.7 mile trail actually has two trailheads, one on KMD and the other on Rice Rips Road. On the KMD side, hikers will quickly see the ruins of the 1882 Cascade Woolen Mill, which represents a large part of Oakland’s history as a manufacturer. Continuing on, hikers will take a scenic walk through the woods along the riverbank of the stream. Hikers who reach track their miles may join the “100 Mile Hike Club” and receive a free t-shirt. Inquire with the Recreation Department to get a form!
